Masseter Botox and Bruxism

Bruxism is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth during the day or in sleep. Over time it can cause tooth wear and fractures, damage to fillings and prostheses, jaw muscle pain and fatigue, morning headaches and discomfort in the jaw joint.

The masseter is the strong chewing muscle on each side of the jaw. In masseter botox treatment, a small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into this muscle with a fine needle. It temporarily reduces the muscle's contraction force, which may ease clenching force and related muscle pain.

The treatment is considered for adult patients with bruxism-related muscle pain and overactivity who are found suitable after examination. It is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain muscle or nerve disorders, or when there is infection at the injection site.

The procedure takes a few minutes and usually needs no anaesthesia. The effect starts within a few days, becomes clear within two to four weeks and usually lasts 3–6 months. Botox does not remove the cause of bruxism; a night guard (occlusal splint) and habit management may also be part of the plan. The right approach is decided by your dentist after examination.
